As we approach July 13th, a significant date marking the 70th anniversary of Frida Kahlo’s passing, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on her extraordinary life and enduring legacy. Frida Kahlo’s journey is not just a tale of artistic triumph but a profound narrative of resilience, pain, and an unyielding spirit. Her ability to create beauty amidst suffering is an inspiration that transcends time, resonating deeply with many, including myself.

The Unyielding Spirit of Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo, born in 1907 in Mexico City, lived a life punctuated by physical and emotional torment. At the tender age of six, she contracted polio, which left her with a limp. This early brush with adversity was just a prelude to the challenges that lay ahead. At 18, Frida was involved in a near-fatal bus accident that shattered her spine and pelvis. The aftermath of this tragic incident confined her to bed for extended periods and led to numerous surgeries and chronic pain that plagued her for the rest of her life.

Despite her suffering, or perhaps because of it, Kahlo turned to art as a means of expression and solace. Her paintings, often raw and visceral, depicted her pain, struggles, and deep introspection. Through her self-portraits, she explored themes of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Frida’s work is not merely about personal suffering; it is a profound commentary on the human condition.

Art as a Beacon of Hope

Frida’s relentless pursuit of art, despite her debilitating condition, serves as a beacon of hope and determination. Her famous words, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best,” underscore her introspective journey. She transformed her suffering into a powerful visual narrative, making her one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century.

Her marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera was another tumultuous aspect of her life, marked by infidelities and heartbreaks. Yet, even in the throes of emotional despair, Frida’s creativity never waned. She continued to produce art that was both deeply personal and universally resonant.

A Personal Reflection: From Adversity to Generative Art

Frida Kahlo’s story resonates with me on a profoundly personal level. Much like Frida, my life has been marked by significant challenges. My battle with ALS has tested my physical and emotional limits. However, in the face of this adversity, I found a new medium to channel my creative spirit: generative art.

Transitioning from traditional forms of art to AI-generated creations has been a transformative journey. It has allowed me to explore new realms of creativity, pushing the boundaries of what art can be. This journey is a testament to the indomitable human spirit that Frida exemplified. Her ability to create amidst chaos and pain inspired me to harness the power of technology and my experiences to produce art that is both innovative and expressive.

    Legacy and Inspiration

Frida Kahlo’s legacy is a testament to the power of art to transcend pain and adversity. Her life and work continue to inspire millions around the world, including myself. She taught us that art is not just a form of expression but a powerful tool for healing and transformation.

As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of her passing, let us celebrate Frida Kahlo not just as an artist but as a symbol of resilience and an enduring source of inspiration. Her story reminds us that no matter the hardships we face, our creativity and spirit can lead us to create something beautiful and everlasting.

In the spirit of Frida, let’s continue to push the boundaries, embrace our pain, and turn it into a canvas of endless possibilities.

Reflecting on Frida Kahlo’s journey, I am reminded of Buckminster Fuller’s words that I hold dear: “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” Frida did just that with her art, and in my own way, I strive to do the same with generative art. Here’s to the indomitable spirit of Frida Kahlo and to all of us who find strength and inspiration in her legacy.

    Desert Illusions

    Desert Illusions: Surrealism Meets Minimalism

While I was redesigning my digital space, my creative juices flowed into a brand-new collection: ‘Desert Illusions‘. This series captures a dreamlike fusion, where the subtleties of minimalistic landscapes meet the ethereal charm of surrealism. Each piece is a vibrant dance of colors and emotions, with the play of light and shadows narrating tales of enigmatic beauty. Whether it’s the gentle curve of a dune or the juxtaposition of reality with fantasy, this collection is an invitation to a world where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary.

For those who wish to bring a piece of this dreamy realm into their daily lives, I’m thrilled to announce the ‘Desert Illusions’ 2024 calendar, presented in a sleek A3 size. It’s now available for just €45 on my webshop. Embrace the year ahead with art that inspires wonder and contemplation every day.

    Diving Deeper into AI

This summer, I ventured into the intricate maze of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, enrolling in courses that expanded my horizon online via Coursera and Deeplearning.ai. I’ll confess; it wasn’t always smooth sailing, especially with my last math class being a distant memory from 35 years ago! However, the experience invigorated my passion. Presently, I’m in the throes of experimenting with my own coding models. A special shoutout to OpenAI’s decoder for making this eye-coding journey less arduous. As they say, 90% of coding is debugging – I’ve come to realize how true that statement is.

AI Portraits: A New Service on the Horizon

Building on my newfound knowledge, I’ve begun training and fine-tuning image models, specializing in AI-generated portraits. With just 20-30 pictures of the subject, the results are mesmerizing. I aim to provide a touch of exclusivity combined with unparalleled quality, which is why I’ve opted for premium prints for these portraits.

    Life’s Personal Touches

On a more personal note, August was a month of celebration as I turned 55! Surrounded by family and the warmth of their love, it was a special time. Despite the daily rigours of living with ALS, every day is a blessing. Opting for a tracheostomy was a life-changing decision that brought with it an unexpected zest for life.

First Exposition: A Dream Come True

And now, an announcement that has me tingling with anticipation: my very first exposition! Located just a stone’s throw from my home, the old church venue is close to my heart, allowing me to personally attend and engage with fellow art enthusiasts. Mark your calendars for September 30, October 1, and the weekend of October 7-8, from 12 to 18h at Landpoortstraat 34, Willemstad. I’d be delighted to see you there.

Until then, keep the spirit of art alive and thriving.

    Greetz,

    Bernard

  • Is AI Art ? Exploring a New Frontier in Creative Expression

Is AI Art ? Exploring a New Frontier in Creative Expression

    The Evolving Definition of Art

Art, as we understand it, has been in constant evolution throughout human history. We’ve seen it shift from cave paintings to abstract expressionism, from physical sculptures to digital installations. Each leap in our collective knowledge and capabilities have provided new forms and mediums for creative expression. Now, we find ourselves on the cusp of another significant shift – the advent of artificial intelligence in art, AI art.

The question then arises – can the creations of AI truly be classified as art? The Encyclopedia Britannica defines art as “something that is created with imagination and skill, that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings.” If we examine AI output through this lens, we find that it checks all these boxes. AI creations, brought to life through human-devised algorithms, can indeed produce beauty, stir emotions, and express ideas – components intrinsic to what we consider ‘art.’

AI Art, Art and AI in Harmony

In my personal artistic practice, I lean heavily on the power of various AI tools. Technologies like Midjourney, Kaiber.ai, OpenAI, Runway ML, and Aiva.ai are not just tools, they’re collaborators. They play an integral role in my creative journey, enabling me to produce work that resonates on aesthetic, intellectual, and emotional levels. The emergence of AI in art doesn’t mark a substitution of human creativity, but rather a marriage of human imagination with machine precision. This fusion results in a new form of art – AI art – that expands the boundaries of creative expression. It enables us to explore realms of creativity previously unfathomable, resulting in works that have the power to surprise, inspire, and provoke thought – just like traditional forms of art have been doing for centuries.

    A New Layer of Complexity

The integration of AI in the art world is not a threat to the importance or value of human-created art. Rather, it presents a new layer of depth and complexity to the artistic landscape. AI art is a testament to the boundless potential of human ingenuity when channeled through technology. It exhibits the ability to create beauty, express complex ideas, and evoke emotional responses – qualities that have always been central to art.

Navigating the Frontier of AI Art

As we venture further into the frontier of AI art, we’re not just spectators watching a phenomenon unfold from the sidelines. We’re active participants in its shaping. The symbiotic interaction between human creativity and artificial intelligence is continually redefining our understanding of what art is and what it can be. It’s opening up new dimensions of perception and artistic expression that are fascinating to navigate and explore.

    The Verdict

So, is AI art? As an AI artist, my answer is a resounding “Yes”. The inclusion of AI in art marks a transformative moment in the evolution of artistic expression. It’s a point where we broaden our understanding of what art can be, who (or what) can create it, and how it can touch and transform our lives. The journey into the world of AI art is one that we’re just beginning to embark on, and I, for one, eagerly anticipate where this path will lead us.

  • The COBRA Art Movement 75 years: A Tribute Collection

The COBRA Art Movement 75 years: A Tribute Collection

In 1948, a fresh and radical artistic wave took hold of the European art scene in the form of the COBRA Art Movement. Now, 75 years later, the movement’s influence remains strong, prompting the creation of a Tribute to COBRA, a special collection that celebrates the vitality and enduring relevance of this pioneering movement.

A Revolutionary Beginning: The Birth of the COBRA Art Movement

The COBRA Art Movement emerged from the ruins of World War II as a beacon of hope and creative innovation. Its name is an acronym for the home cities of its founders – Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. These artists sought to shatter the conventional confines of art, creating an avant-garde movement that would continue to influence the field for decades.

The Visionaries of COBRA: The Six Founding Fathers

The six founding fathers of the COBRA Art Movement – Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Asger Jorn, Christian Dotremont, and Joseph Noiret – were artists of different nationalities united by a common vision. They championed the power of individual expression, the beauty of the spontaneous, and the importance of the primal and raw in art. Influenced by well known artists like Paul Klee and Joao Miro with an antipathy against Surrealism (I disagree with that).

While I am not a renowned expert, I am an art lover myself, and I am fascinated by the unique and transformative contributions these artists made to the art world. For a more comprehensive understanding of these artists and the COBRA Art Movement, I encourage you to visit the Wikipedia page or explore the collections at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam or visit the honorary exhibition at the COBRA Museum Amstelveen in the Netherlands.

    Karel Appel

Karel Appel, a Dutch painter, was one of the leading figures of the COBRA movement. His work was characterized by bold, abstract forms and vibrant colours, reflecting his belief that art should come from a place of instinct and emotion rather than logic and premeditation.

    CONSTANT

Constant Nieuwenhuys, commonly known as Constant, was integral to the group’s inception, and his work vividly encapsulated the COBRA ethos of vibrant expressiveness. Despite later shifting his focus towards his utopian ‘New Babylon’ project, Constant’s contributions during the COBRA years continue to inspire artists today.

    Corneille

Corneille, another Dutch artist, was known for his lively and expressive compositions, filled with fantastic creatures and landscapes. His works embodied the COBRA ethos of spontaneous and imaginative art.

    Asger Jorn

Asger Jorn, a Danish painter, was a pivotal figure in COBRA. His work, marked by its energetic brushstrokes and raw emotion, encapsulates the spirit of the movement.

    Christian Dotremont and Joseph Noiret

Christian Dotremont and Joseph Noiret, both Belgian, were essential in defining the COBRA philosophy. Dotremont, also a poet, was known for his “logograms”, combining visual and linguistic elements in his art. Noiret, while lesser-known, played a vital role in shaping the movement’s direction.

A Personal Reflection: My Connection to the COBRA Art Movement

The COBRA Art Movement’s focus on spontaneity, individuality, and the power of the primal have always resonated with me. As an artist, I find myself particularly drawn to the works of Karel Appel and Corneille, which captivated me with their simplicity and the imaginative figures that populate their canvases.

Questioning children Cobra art movement. Karel appel

While the commercialisation of their art through mass-produced silkscreens later in their careers somewhat diluted the originality and exclusivity of their work, their early pieces remain inspiring. These creations, imbued with the raw energy and creativity of the early COBRA Art Movement, continue to fascinate and inspire me.

Honouring the Legacy of the Cobra art movement : The Tribute to COBRA Collection

As an artist working with generative AI, I am well aware of the limitations of this technology, most notably its dependency on its training data. This means that while AI can create beautiful, intriguing pieces, these works are often reflective of the data used to train the AI, rather than the AI ‘creating’ in the same sense a human artist would.

Because of this, I have chosen to create a “Tribute to COBRA” collection, a homage to a movement that has profoundly shaped my artistic journey. This collection is currently available for viewing only, a decision made to respect the originality and exclusivity of the works that inspired it.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Art and AI

With the advancements in technology, the world of art is continuously evolving. The intersection of art and artificial intelligence offers exciting possibilities for future artistic expression and appreciation. As we continue to explore these possibilities, it’s important to remember and celebrate the groundbreaking movements, like COBRA, that have paved the way.
